Paramhansa Yogananda was quite enthusiastic about the healing power of sunlight; he also recommended people take cod liver oil! (Luckily there are now flavored versions)  …Of course, both sunlight and cod liver oil give the body Vitamin D, along with many other health benefits. Eggs are another source of vitamin D, but most chickens live indoors, so they are vitamin D deficient, too! However, eggs from free-range hens contain three to six times more vitamin D than typical supermarket eggs… because they get some sunshine every day. So – we all need it!

Yogananda called his sunlight healing techniques, “Heliotropics.” He emphasizes that a person can use mind power to draw the healing power of the sun going right past the skin and entering deep into the body. I have seen this give profound and immediate results in certain cases of serious infection. I will discuss it a little bit here, and there is a chapter on Heliotropics in Divine Will Healing, a book on Yogananda’s teachings on healing.

Story of Healing with Sunlight

A couple of years ago, a young mother called me wanting my help because she had a very bad sore throat. Her husband is very well versed in herbal remedies and normally that works for her, but this time she just could not shake this infection. She wanted my prayers, and sometimes I have helped her family in that way – they are very receptive to prayer! But this time I said – “It is a very sunny day – why don’t you come by and I will guide you in Master’s techniques on Heliotropics. Bring your little girl, and I’ll watch her while you do this.”

So, they came right over.  I met her outside and asked her to open her mouth wide, toward the sun. I then checked to make sure the sunlight was directly hitting the infected area, and that is when I got a good look at it. Wow – no wonder she was hurting – it was very red and swollen and it made it very difficult for her to talk clearly, or to eat or drink. I then taught her this:

Open mouth wide and turn head up so that sunlight can penetrate your mouth and nostrils. While doing this, gently quiver your head, concentrating upon the mucous membrane and the throat. Think that the energy you are sending by quivering is absorbing and chemicalizing the sunlight into a hot healing force, passing through your mucous membrane and throat, helping to roast the disease germs. Practice for fifteen minutes.

Once she was thus instructed, I played with her little girl (age 2) so Mommy could stay focused for a full 15 minutes. What a nice luxury for a mom! When I returned – she said she felt much better, and she let me take a look.  I was amazed – ALL the red and swollen tissue had returned to normal! She looked and felt great. It was a lasting healing. Now, as I said, her family is very receptive to prayer and healing energy …but even so, this was still a dramatic healing. I was very happy for her.

HELIOTROPIC METHOD OF SELF-HEALING

Now, it must be noted that the Life Force in the body must be kept alive and alert, for it is this force which vitalizes and chemicalizes the most important of all energies. Ultra violet rays are ineffective on a dead man. The method of simultaneously using Life Force and sunlight is the great new Heliotropic or Heliotherapic method of healing. Every one of the following methods is based upon quickening the Life Force and sun’s rays to combine into a greater force for the healing of different body parts. Ordinary sun baths are partially effective, but very little about harnessing sunlight to Life Force for therapeutic purposes is yet known.

FOR COLDS:

Lie flat on your back on a woolen blanket in the sunlight any time during the day. Every day expose chests, thighs, and feet. Open mouth wide and turn head up so that sunlight can penetrate your mouth and nostrils. While doing this, gently quiver your head, concentrating upon the mucous membrane and the throat. Think that the energy you are sending by quivering is absorbing and chemicalizing the sunlight into a hot healing force, passing through your mucous membrane and throat, helping to roast the disease germs. Practice for fifteen minutes.

For chest colds: Let the sunlight play on the chest while you are in a sitting or lying position. Rapidly but gently rub chest, injecting energy into it through your hands. Mentally visualize that the Life Force in your hands is chemicalizing the sunlight falling on your chest. This new force is known to be very effective in destroying disease germs of the respiratory organs. This exercise must last about half an hour, both morning and afternoon, on a light stomach. Once a week it has been found effective to fast on orange juice with only fruits and nuts for the daily dinner. This is especially beneficial for persons suffering with catarrh.

THESE ARE OBSTRUCTORS OF SUNLIGHT:

Glass windows, clothing, unopened pores of the body due to infrequent baths or hasty baths without rubbing, showers, staying indoors, and going only from home to office and from office to home.

SUN IS THE LIFE OF EVERYTHING:

Please remember that the ancient Orientals worshiped the sun as the life of everything, and the body as well. They were real “Sun worshipers.” They meditated in the open, with their bare bodies, and every thirsty Life Force drinking Ultra Violet Rays through the pores of the skin.

Modern man, with his indoor life and too much clothing, creates darkness in his body temple, inviting the demons of bacteria to dance the dance of disease and destruction. Become a true “Sun Worshipper” loving the Sun of Life within and outside your body.

The follower of the above with the Vita-Heliotropic method, flushes his body pores with cheerful vitality from within, and unobstructed sunlight from without. Such a vitalized man lives in a temple of living energy, in which the powers of mind and wisdom love to come and remain.

Prevent Flu with Sunlight and Vitamin D3

Paramhansa Yogananda was quite enthusiastic about the healing power of sunlight, and he also recommended in his lessons that his students take cod liver oil. This was unusual since he normally recommended a vegetarian diet, though he did make exceptions in some cases. Of course, both sunlight and cod liver oil give the body Vitamin D, along with many other health benefits.

Yogananda called his sunlight healing techniques, “Heliotropics.” Over the course of this winter, I will highlight some of those techniques in future posts and give helpful pointers. For now, suffice it to say that a person can use mind power to visualize the healing power of the sun entering the body, going right past the skin and deep into the body. I have seen this give profound and immediate results in certain cases of serious infection. It needs more serious discussion than I can it give here. Let’s just consider this point an introduction to the whole concept. However, there is a chapter highlighting  Heliotropics in Divine Will Healing, a collection of Yogananda’s teachings on healing.

Right now, as kids are getting back into school, I wanted to let you know about the healing benefits of Vitamin D3, and how it might be of great help to you this fall and winter. I was especially glad to get this information, because for the last 6-7 years I have struggled with asthma, and it tended to get very bad by late winter; any little sniffle would go straight to my lungs and cause a serious infection.

I have fair skin, and I’ve been careful to avoid getting too much sun. Well – maybe I was being too good at that! It turns out that vitamin D deficiency is a big part of infectious asthma for many people. Once I learned this, I started taking 2000 IU of Vitamin D3, at the suggestion of a naturaopath. I feel better already. I won’t go into details; suffice it to say you might look into it, too. You can also get your vitamin D levels tested and monitored, if you prefer to go that route. As they say, “Ask your health care provider.”

I also buy Twin Labs cod liver oil there. I mention this for convenience sake – I have no financial relationship with this company.

My youngest son also had a very difficult time with serious colds that caused him to miss quite a bit of school.  Once we started him on lemon-flavored cod liver oil, he developed a much more robust immune system and became one of the healthier kids in his class.

Egg yolks are another source of vitamin D, but the poor little chickens spend most of their time indoors, so they are vit D deficient, too! Try to get eggs from chickens who spend their days out in the sun:

Vitamin D deficiency and Swine Flu?
Notice the vitamin D implications in the 2 studies on swine flu, below. Both of the cities are far to the north (Chicago and Boston), and at least in those climates, the people who were hardest hit with swine flu were blacks and Hispanics. The darker skin pigmentation was genetically designed to block out the stronger rays of the sun near the equator. So – if you do have darker skin, and yet live in a northern climate, you might want to make an extra effort to get more direct sunlight, and take vitamin D3 and/or cod liver oil. (Notice that northerly folks, like the Icelanders, practically drink the stuff, and they are quite healthy, even though their climate is very cold and dark in the winter.)

And all of us, black, white, and in-between, need to be mindful of getting enough Vitamin D because our lifestyle has moved indoors, for the most part.

Swine flu sends more blacks, Hispanics to hospital(abridged)

ATLANTA — Swine flu was four times more likely to send blacks and Hispanics to the hospital than whites, according to a study in Chicago that offers one of the first looks at how the virus has affected different racial groups…

…Researchers looked at more than 1,500 lab-confirmed swine flu cases reported to the Chicago Department of Public Health from late April through late July. Blacks with swine flu were hospitalized at a rate of 9 per 100,000, and Hispanics at a rate of 8 per 100,000. For whites, the rate was 2 per 100,000, the study found.

Earlier this month, Boston health officials released some unpublished information that found three out of four Bostonians hospitalized with swine flu were black or Hispanic.

…Vitamin D is emerging as one of the most vigorous antibiotics out there.  In 2006, the journal Epidemiology and Infection reported on a study showing that activated vitamin D works as a steroid hormone, and that children who are D deficient are more susceptible to viral infections and respiratory ailments.   The journal Pediatric Research concurred, citing the increased risk of viral infections in children deficient in the vitamin.
