News from Medjugorje; update on Swamiji’s visit

This beautiful letter came to us from Miriam, Swamiji’s nurse…

Mary Kretzmann

Dear Ananda family,

About a month ago, Swamiji decided to go to Medjugorje where apparitions of the blessed Virgin Mary appear to one of six visionaries. She has appeared to them for the past 28 years and gives daily, monthly, and yearly messages to the world through them. He wanted this to be a pilgrimage and decided to take only myself, (his nurse), and Nandini, from Ananda Assisi, as his guide in Medjugorje.

The first few days were strange as Nandini attempted to obtain interviews for Swamiji with any of the three visionaries who are currently here at this time. She has been told so many different things and been promised interviews which never happened, to the point where we could no longer believe anything would happen until it actually did. It seems that almost everyone is related and most particularly everyone is a “cousin” to one of the visionaries.

After being here for a day and a half, Nandini asked, “Do you perceive anything, Swamiji?” He answered, “No. But this doesn’t mean it’s not here. Maybe it’s only me.” Later that day, Swamiji said, “I’m glad I came, but I’m not inspired. So far, anyway.”

After many promises of, “yes, you have an interview with Mirjana, no, it’s a public satsang, no, it’s been canceled due to rain, …,” we finally made it to a satsang with Jakov on Tuesday afternoon. (He was 10 when the visions began coming to him and he’s now 38.) There was a very large group of Italian pilgrims there and he spoke to them fluently in their language. We only heard him speak about 10 minutes or less and then he quickly disappeared. He has a very sweet, angelic face that seemed to always be smiling.

On Wednesday morning we planned to go to the Apparition Hill to The Blue Cross (this was where the visionaries met secretly during the communist regime). The Blessed Virgin appears here on the second of every month to Mirjana. This area is also the site of the first apparitions in 1981.

There have been many storms and a lot of rain in the last days. We prayed that Wednesday morning would be clear or at least not raining, so we could somehow manage to get Swamiji up on this hill. There was also the possibility that Swamiji would have an interview with Vicka sometime after the appearance of apparition.

By the grace of Divine Mother and Nandini’s immense tenacity, Swamiji was able to be at the apparition this morning sitting about 1 meter from Mirjana. The meeting was in the house of Mirjana and not on Apparition Hill due to the rain. Only a few select people could be inside with Mirjana and the rest of us were outside surrounding the house. Swamiji couldn’t hear much nor did he see that he was so near the visionary. However, he said afterward, “Although I couldn’t hear, I felt a strong love in my heart. This is what matters.”

In these days, we’ve felt a certain caution from those who live here. Today Swamiji wore his nayaswami robes and now people approach him with reverence, calling him “Padre.” Some have asked us who he is and we try to explain simply.

After the meeting of the apparition, we were taken to the home of Vicka, the oldest and perhaps most dynamic of the visionaries. She sees the Blessed Virgin daily. We had an incredible satsang with Vicka and her husband, Mario. Her husband’s eyes are so full of light and joy and he spoke some time about his inner relationship with God. Nandini asked some poignant questions of Vicka:

1) What does the Madonna say about meditation?

“Meditation is very good. First pray. Then read the holy scriptures. After that, be in silence and meditation.”

2) What does the Madonna say about other religions?

“All religions are the same in the eyes of the Mother. She looks at the heart.”

3) What about yoga?

“It depends on your heart’s intention.”

4) How can we overcome the ego?

“Live Christ in your heart. Speak less and pray more.”

5) How can we better serve others?

“By example. If you truly love Christ and serve Him through serving others, everyone will be inspired.”

Swamiji was able to have a private meeting with Vicka. Of this meeting, we only know that she told Swamiji, she would always pray for him and asked that he always pray for her.

It’s hard to express in words what it was like to be in the presence of these two people. We were moved to tears talking with them and even while taking photos together. Swamiji weeps even now when he talks of Vicka and says he feels as though she’s a dear friend. He would like to see her again if possible before leaving Medjugorje.

We thought our time in Medjugorje had essentially ended last evening after a full day of blessed meetings. However, this morning brought even more adventure and blessings. After three days of rain, wind, and storms, it became clear and sunny. The visionary, Mirjana, who received the message yesterday, gave a public satsang this morning outside in front of her house. Swamiji was allowed to be inside the gate on the driveway right in front of where she was speaking. When she came out she immediately came up to Swamiji and greeted him. She talked for some time about her initial experiences as a child when she began seeing the apparition. She is a dynamic speaker and spoke fluent Italian to the group. Nandini asked a question about the prophecies regarding three days of darkness and Mirjana said that the Madonna has never spoken about this. Swamiji said that he found her very impressive. She spoke with great clarity, truthfulness, and understanding. (I, unfortunately, did not bring the camera so there are no pictures of Mirjana and Swamiji.)

Later this same morning arrangements were made to have Swamiji transported in a chair to the top of Apparition Hill. Six young men from the community of Cenacolo came with a special chair and took Swamiji up the hill. These young men are all recovering drug addicts and live in a community here that was founded by Sister Elvira. Their testimonials are amazing and through living in spiritual community, their lives have been completely transformed. These six young men stopped with Swamiji at each one of the Stations of the Cross, allowing him to pray while they also prayed the Rosary. They would continue to recite the Rosary as they climbed further up the hill. It was one long and beautiful prayer to the top of the hill. They requested that Swamiji bless them and you will see pictures below of him doing this.

This trip has been full of the blessings of Divine Mother and we’re grateful to all of you who have prayed for Swamiji in these days.

In Master’s love,

  1. James Says:

This article contains quotes from the visionary Vicka which could easily be misunderstood. Really, it is most likely that Swamiji himself misunderstood what Vicka was saying:

    (1) “Meditation is very good. First pray. Then read the holy scriptures. After that, be in silence and meditation.”

Comment: If Vicka said this, she talked about the Christian concept of meditation which is a mental process, typically thinking deeply about a passage from the Gospel. This quote cannot be understood as if Vicka is endorsing Eastern meditation. On the contrary, when asked about the usefulness of Eastern meditation, Our Lady of Medjugorje answered in 1984: “Why do you call it ‘meditations’ when it deals with human works. The true meditation is a meeting with Jesus. When you discover joy, interior peace, you must know there is only one God, and only one Mediator: Jesus Christ” (quote from ‘Words From Heaven’, collection of the Virgin Mary’s messages from Medjugorje, 11. edition, St. James Publications 2009).

    (2) “All religions are the same in the eyes of the Mother. She looks at the heart.”

COMMENT: This is most surely a misunderstanding on behalf of Mr. Swamiji. If Vicka said anything remotely like that, she could have said: “all PEOPLE are the same…”. Again according to the collection of the Virgin Mary’s messages from Medjugorje, she said “Certainly, all religions are not equal, but all men are equal before God” and “In the world, all religions are not the same because all people have not complied with the Commandments of God. They reject and disparage them”.

I also take the freedom of doubting two other points in Swamiji’s narrative, those two being what Vicka allegedly said about yoga (she does not practice yoga; Vicka is a Christian) and the claim that Vicka’s husband allegedly asked Swamiji for a blessing. Without knowing the actual facts, I know Vicka’s husband well enough to sincerely doubt he would ask for a blessing from someone who is not a priest.

      Dear James,

      Thank you for your reply.

Actually, in a way, I agree with you that not all religions are equal, and indeed not if/when they disparage the ways of God, as you put it. For instance, if a “religion” actively preaches violence, hate and discrimination toward others, it can hardly be called holy! The clarification – “all people are equal”- is clarifying. I do, however, believe that religions can de facto be “the same” if the individual’s heart is pure. “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

That pure intention of the heart will bless and guide the sincere seeker to pick through and follow the holier aspects of whatever religion he may have been born into. Of course, a soul is deeply blessed if he can find, or be born into, a religious teaching that very clearly helps him to walk the path of holiness…

This illuminates the statement above, “All religions are the same in the eyes of the Mother. She looks at the heart.”

“Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, mind, soul and strength, and thy neighbor as thyself…”

If the seeker, in any religion, finds precious pearls to show him the pathway to the purified heart before God, he or she can find true holiness. Indeed, as Christ says, they shall see God. So – I’m not about to argue with Him about that.

Similarly – this illuminates the question of yoga. They did not say Vicka practices yoga, but only that she answered a question on yoga:

      What about yoga?

“It depends on your heart’s intention.”

Again – “Blessed are the pure in heart…”

And finally – why do you say, “..’allegedly’ asked Swamiji for a blessing,” as though it is a crime?

Are all priests holy? Surely not. One need only read the news to be sorely disappointed. Are all priests then unholy, as some would imply? Surely not – one need only read history, and look around with open eyes, and an open heart.

Have others reached holiness without Catholic ordination? Surely so… Again, one need only read history with open eyes and an open, purified heart.

“Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.”

Indeed, the entire article can be better understood by keeping this, and all of the Beatitudes in mind.

God bless you, now and always.

  2. Bobby Maso Says:

I was wondering if anyone can please, please ask Swamiji or Nandini, or Vicka, or her husband Mario, or possibly please any of the other visionaries to pray for my younger brother, Matthew Joseph Maso, who is 16 years old. He was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes last year and was immediately put on insulin. This happened in August. Then, in October, his and our family doctor said to not give him any because he was probably in his honeymoon period, where you don’t need it. This, we were told, normally lasts only a few weeks or more, but he has been off it since. We had prayed for so long and we know that the Blessed Mary and Jesus have answered our prayers. Although, in mid January, he had a cold and since then, his blood sugars have been higher- like in the 200’s, and even in the 300’s once in a while. We believe he is healed but the blood sugars scare us since we know normal blood sugar is between 80 and 180, which he had been from mid-October up to early February. We know it’s not the worst thing in the world, but not having him on the insulin and him not needing it really made us feel like he was cured or much closer to being cured. He is also very concerned and said he has a fear that he will go to sleep one night and not wake up, or that he will be alert inside but his body will appear motionless on the outside. Please pray for him. Please ask a special petiton that he is cured, or that by the power of the Madonna’s Divine Grace he is free from this disease and his body is truly healed in every way. He is a good boy and so much loves Christ and his own life. He has always been picked on by other children and has no other friends other than his family and God. Please, if you were to see him, you would see how he is such a wonderful young man and is very innocent in his heart. Even when he sins, we feel a sense of innocence in him, because he never means to be rude or mean or bad. Please, although we do pray for ourselves as well sometimes, we only care that Matt’s miracle comes and is delivered to him, that he gets a second chance to have a healthy and safe life and body. Please, please, please. We are even hoping to come to Medjugorje with him to pray there. Please, please, we ask for any help and that Matt be kept in the prayers of everyone. He is not the only one dealing with this affliction, as he also realizes, and we pray for everyone else who also has it, but we ask that we receive the Lord and the Holy Mother’s Divine Blessings. I don’t know much about Swamiji. In fact, only what I’ve read here today, but I feel that his help and certainly the help of the visionaries can also help relieve my only brother, Matthew, of this ordeal. Please, please pray for him. In God’s Holy Name, We Bless You And Ask That God See Your Kindness In Helping Us, Love, Sincerely And Wholeheartedly, Bobby Maso. Amen!!!! Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Praise His Name Now And Forever, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.

      Dear Bobby Maso,

We will pray for your younger brother, Matthew Joseph Maso. This prayer ministry was founded by Swami Kriyananda, years ago. I will also forward your prayer request to him, and to Nandini.

May the healing grace of God be with you and your family now.

      In Him,

      Mary Kretzmann
