Luther Burbank’s Methods

Dear Ones,

I was writing up next month’s newsletter, I had to cut this section (below) from the print version.  But it is too good – so I am sending it along as a bonus to you!

Luther Burbank’s Methods

excerpted from: Quickening Human Evolution

BY PARAMHANSA YOGANANDA (East-West, January–February 1929)

How is the human brain going to acquire in a lifetime all knowledge and wisdom? That is my question. When I met Luther Burbank, he showed me a walnut tree, and he said, “I took off more than one hundred years from its usual period of growth. I grew that in twelve years.” And you could see the tree bearing walnuts! He made almonds have soft shells, made over the tomato and created the Shasta daisy from bulbs, and the cactus without thorns. In primitive times the different animals used to eat the cactus, so the cactus developed thorns. When one life begins to hurt another life, that life develops weapons of defense. Burbank went into the garden, looked at the cactus, and every day began to talk to the cactus. “Please, beloved Cactus, I am Luther Burbank, your friend. I don’t mean to hurt you. I am not going to hurt you at all, so why develop thorns?” And so the thornless cactus was developed by talking, by attention, by his knowledge of nature’s laws. You can impress certain vibrations on protoplasm. If the walnut tree can be made to grow in twelve years instead of one hundred and fifty years, there is a chance for human beings also. How is a human being within sixty years of existence to develop so that he can be the center of all knowledge? That is the point I want to drive home in your mind. I have shown how machinery quickened world evolution. Where did machinery come from?—from the factory of human minds. If man quickened evolution in business, man can quicken his evolution in all branches of life, including his own inner life.

In ordinary study there is a vast difference between the methods applied by teachers in India and in the West. In the West, they pump into the brains of children the ideas, “How many books have you read; how many teachers have you had?” A man returned from college with a Ph.D. in making sugar from different fruits. He was asked if sugar could be made from the guava fruit. After some deep thought, he said, “I did not study that. It was not in my curriculum.” Using common sense was beyond him. It is not pumping from the outside in, that gives you knowledge.

It is the power and largeness of receptivity within that determine how much and how quickly you can grasp knowledge. The man who has the power of receptivity quickly sees everything. An intelligent man lives far ahead of the idiot. All your experiences are measured in terms of the cup of your receptivity.

Prof. James of Harvard said that most of our habits come through heredity. Feeble-minded people, science says, cannot be helped. Scientists take measurements and believe in the stamp of heredity too much. They forget this: that by awakening the brain cells, man can quicken his evolution. The power of receptivity of the brain cells can become so great that a man can receive all the things he wants to absorb within himself in a normal lifetime.

How can you quicken evolution? By consciously condensing all your experiences, by the power of concentration. By concentration you gather your attention, focusing it to a point. By condensation you again use your attention to quickly do a thing which ordinarily would take a long time. I will tell you of such an experience:

A friend of mine said I was all right as a spiritual man, but that I could not succeed in business. I replied, “I am going to make five thousand dollars in business for you within two weeks.” He said, “You will have to show me. I am from Missouri.” I did not rush to invest money on unwise things. I used concentration, disengaged my mind of all disturbances, and focused my attention on one thing. (Most of us have the searchlight of our attention turned outside all the time instead of inside—we should turn the searchlight of the mind on the divine source. Every change in business, every change in the planetary system, in the physical system—everything is recorded there. We are living on one side of the universe; the other side is more tangible than this side.) So I touched that source. Ordinarily men do not concentrate—the mind is restless, and the restless mind jumps at conclusions and races for something that does not belong to it. You must obey the law. Remember, concentrate and then ask Divine Power. Thus, as soon as I contacted that source, there were shows to me lots of houses. But I did not sit quietly in my room and say, “The Heavenly Father will open the ceiling and drop five thousand dollars in my lap,” because I had favored Him with a fervent prayer. I bought the Sunday papers and looked at real estate advertisements. I picked out a few houses, and told my friend to invest his money in them. He said, “Everything seems pretty shaky,” and I said, “Never mind, doubting Thomas, don’t try to spoil success by your doubts.” In two weeks there was a real estate boom and prices of houses went way up high. He sold the houses and had a clear profit of five thousand dollars. I showed him that the power of God or mind works wherever we apply it with faith.

Subject: “Footnote”

Dear Family and Friends,

Ann, Kiya, Abram and I all arrived on the Big Island Friday
afternoon and are so happy to be home. The biopsy on the foot showed more
than adequate “margins” which is to say we have every hope that this chapter
is now behind us.

We were gone just over two weeks and Abram’s homecoming was
sweet beyond words with a welcome home banner for him, lovely meal and
desserts shared with friends. He is doing incredibly well and without too
much pain – and he’s got some pretty good drugs when it is painful! Someone
who hadn’t met him before was at the dinner and said they never would have
guessed it could be something that had just happened to him. He looks great,
is remarkably present and pretty much the same as always albeit not quite as
mobile. We’re still learning about the process but is seems that after
several weeks of healing, he can begin to be fitted with a prosthesis.

We are well past the worst, and feeling an amazing relief at
having survived some very dark days. The incredible support we felt at
every turn was humbling and a great reminder of how much a little kindness
can mean to someone in need. To all of you who have shared this rocky road
with us we send our love, friendship and an invitation to visit us in Hawaii
if you ever get the chance!

Much love and aloha from all of us,

Michael, Ann, Kiya and Abram

Abram Gornik post-surgery, Turmeric Tea, more…

Dear Prayer Group,

I’ve combined a few items here in one post, because this also goes out by e-mail…so I wanted to keep it all in one mailing!

Below is a quick note from the Gornik family – I apologize that I did not get it out sooner! Thank you all for your prayers. Please keep Abram on your personal prayer list for as long as you feel called to do so, and we will also keep him on our regular healing prayer list for his time of recovery and adjustment.

Saturday Morning

Dear Friends,

A quick note to let you all know the surgery went just fine. Abram had physical therapy this morning and we may even get out of the hospital tomorrow – we are all looking forward to being home again soon!

Love,

The Gorniks

Living with Spirit: On a separate topic, I wrote a short blog today about the many opportunities at Ananda for young adults, including our Living with Spirit program.

Details here: “Young Folks at Ananda

Turmeric: And finally, I thought many of you might want to know more about the healing benefits of turmeric.  Here is a link to an article:

Turmeric May Help Prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases

An ancient remedy may enliven your brain as well as your food

The link above has lots of helpful information. And here is my easy recipe for a small cup of turmeric tea.  It uses 1 Tsp of turmeric, which I’ve heard is the amount you need daily to prevent Alzheimer’s and other conditions. I like to use an espresso cup – which is about 1/3 cup or 5 TABL.  I’d rather do this than make a full cup of tea.

1 teaspoon turmeric powder

small amount of honey

hot water

add milk to taste

Take care of your health and you take care of your mind, as well.  Some research came out a few years ago that showed that Alzheimer’s might be a form of diabetes in the brain.  Interestingly, turmeric is also very helpful to stabilize blood sugar.  Of course, if you are diabetic, and especially if you are insulin dependent, consult with your doctor before making radical changes in your care.  The advice given here is primarily meant to support long-term health.  It can also be used to reverse serious illness – but that should be done carefully, and with supervision.

God bless you all.

Joy to you,

Abram Gornik: Surgery today, Friday at 2 PM

Dear Prayer Group,

Thank you for your prayers for Abram. They are supporting him in Light now. The lab reports have made it clear that he needs the amputation after all.  Abram’s attitude is very good, considering that this is a pretty big step for a teen. (That is why I have given his situation such a priority on this prayer line right now.) There will be adjustments, of course. Yet saving his life is an even bigger deal, and he seems to have a good perspective on it.

It is sad that he needs to lose the foot, after all.  But there are 2 main purposes to a prayer ministry. Sometimes the prayers “cure” a person, and the karma is mitigated or “disappears”.

And sometimes, for reasons unknown to us,  the prayers serve, primarily, to support the person as he goes through a big karmic episode.  The grace of God carries a person through such a rough patch.  And this beautiful, comforting grace is sent by God, Christ, Guru directly, and through His heavenly angels, and His prayer angels here on earth. So thank you all for what you do.

In directing this healing prayer ministry, I can’t afford to let prayer requests pull me down. And yet, seven years ago, when Abram first received this diagnosis of cancer in his foot, I wept for weeks. It hit me harder than any other prayer request I have ever received.

In a spiritual family, we are often connected on a deeper than conscious level. Was I feeling the bulk of the karma he was facing? Perhaps.  But today, there is peace.  So – yes, Abram has a lot to adjust to in the coming days/weeks/months. But there is also this peaceful feeling that he has finished the cancer karma. Can I guarantee that? Of course not, but the feeling is there – so I take hope from that.

And so – it is a beautiful thing. Abram will be a cool kid with his new titanium alloy leg, or whatever they give him.  More than any teen I know – he will be able to adjust to it rather naturally and with a sense of perspective and humor. I am sure there will be some rough spots – yet overall his cheerfulness will carry him through.

Prayers for Abram to make it so…

God bless you all.

In Him,

Mary

Thursday Night

Dear Friends,

We got Abram’s biopsy results back today and it was not good news. There were cancer cells right up to the points of the incision about an inch beyond the tumor itself. The safest way forward is to remove the foot and we are all onboard with it now. It is difficult to go back for another surgery right away but we are glad to have made absolutely sure that it is the right procedure – and there is little doubt now.

The surgery is about 2PM tomorrow (Friday, CA time) and we’ve all got our game face on to get through it. We expect to be in the hospital for 2-3 days afterward and will fly home as soon as Abram is comfortable enough to do so. This has been a roller coaster for sure but after this next lap we will be home and able to begin the healing process. Abram has been steady right through and I think we are all catching up with him a bit.

I can’t possibly describe how much the support of our family and friends has meant to us through all this. We have lacked for absolutely nothing and have deeply appreciated  your prayers, encouraging notes, and endless offers of help. I never imagined there could be SO MUCH kindness and compassion in the world and God forbid that I ever forget it!

It’s quite a process to get your mind around the amputation and we know it will take some time for all of us to get there. A little humor here and there helps a lot so when you’re ready to “go there”, you can check out remembrances of some of our lighter moments below. In Abram’s first cancer bout 7 years ago, we heard about a wonderful organization  called Stumps-R-Us that really had the right spirit about such misfortune – they certainly aren’t into self pity! In the end of course, it’s not such a big deal after all, and we are finding plenty to be thankful for all along the way.

With our deepest love, gratitude and aloha,

Michael, Ann, Kiya and Abram Gornik

Abram Gornik – Monday Night (note from Micheal) Gornik

Dear Prayer Group,

Many of you have appreciated receiving these updates…so here is the latest. Please continue to pray for Abram…see note below.

God bless.

Joy!

Monday Night

Dear Friends,

We wanted to let you know that Abram’s surgery went  very  well today and that he still has his foot! The surgeon was well impressed by the good condition of the foot and the tumor came out cleanly and easily, so much so that he felt we should wait for more tests to consider our options. Pending the biopsy that will be completed late this week or early next, there is still some hope that the foot can be saved.

Abram has navigated all of this with surprising evenness and courage (I wish I could say the same for his Dad!), strengthened immeasurably no doubt by all the prayers and support he has received from family and friends. He described waking up and immediately realizing he could still move his foot —  and a quick glance confirmed it was still there!

With anesthesia enough for the amputation and what would have been a much longer surgery, he is pretty nauseous and “whacked” from all the drugs but is doing just fine. It is quite possible that we will be out of the hospital tomorrow and will be weighing the next steps from there. Daiva (family friend) and I are doing the vigil tonight and letting Ann and Kiya get some rest. I am so thankful for this beautiful, hope-filled night and send each of you our gratitude for sharing this journey with us.

With much love from the Gorniks,

Michael, Ann, Kiya and Abram

Good News about Abram!!!

UPDATE:

Dear Ones,

Good news! Abram is now out of surgery,  and he still has his foot! Thank you for all your prayers!

The surgeon said that the tumor just popped right out very easily so he couldn’t bring himself to take the foot, even though he had gone in prepared for that.  He got clear margins around the tumor. More test results are due back in 5 days, but this all looks very good for now.

Please keep Abram in your prayers for this week for his recovery, and for complete healing from the cancer and this karma.  Hopefully the karma popped right out with the tumor!

Perhaps part of the karma was mitigated through all the prayers, and by Abram’s willingness to let go of the foot – but in the end he didn’t have to do so.

Again, thank you for all your prayers.

God bless…

joy!

Mary

Original post:

Below is a note from Micheal about Abram – sent out to many in their large group of family and friends. I knew Abram was leaning in this direction, but I didn’t want to announce it here.  It was best to wait for Michael and Ann to take that step.

Abram is still in surgery as I write this – I’ll post an update when I receive it.

God bless you all, and thank you for your prayers for Abram and family.

In Master,

Mary Kretzmann

Sunday Night

Dear Family and Friends,

Abram’s surgery is at 10:15AM (in California) on Monday. It will start with removing the tumor to verify that it is the cancer they think it is. There were many ways to play this none of them with clear consequences and in the end it came down to Abram’s call. Arguably, his best shot at a long life is the amputation and he has chosen it. There is still some hope that the final biopsy test will lead this somewhere else and you are most welcome to join us in praying for such a miracle. We are all holding up fairly well (Abram better than the rest of us I think), and extremely thankful for all the kindness, prayers, and friendship so many of you have offered us.  We will get through this, and hopefully with a minimum of whining! We’ll get an update out tomorrow afternoon after the surgery and will let you know how everything goes.

We had the most wonderful trip to Ananda Village this weekend, catching up with dear friends and enjoying the scenic beauty of the Sierra foothills. “Abram’s Right foot memorial volleyball tournament” there attracted 40 enthusiastic players with about as many watching – we played until almost midnight!

In Divine Friendship,

Michael, Ann, Kiya, and Abram

Abram Update – Sunday (surgery Monday Morning)

It was wonderful having Abram, and his family (parents: (Micheal and Ann, and his sister, Kiya) visiting Ananda Village this weekend.

There was a friendly gathering on Friday evening at Master’s Market for pizza night, followed by the volleyball tournament  in the community center (an all-purpose building for sports events and school programs, etc.)  The volleyball games went on to almost midnight – (by that time the teams consisted mostly young people in high school or college!).  Abram then came home with my son, David, age 17 and they stayed up and watched a movie because Abram was “still on Hawaii time”.  That’s okay – David likes to stay up late on Friday night, too.  So it was a fun evening for all. They both slept in, and it was fun to have Abram here joining us for a (late) breakfast!

Abram wanted more time to relax with all of his friends, so on Saturday there was a potluck dinner at the home of Hunter and Audie Black. It is a large home, and it was a great venue for this informal gathering of all ages.

Later in the evening, the young folks wanted to go and play volleyball again…But first we all did a prayer and blessing for Abram before they left for the community center.

Many times we will do this for someone in the community when they are facing a serious surgery. After invoking the blessings of God and the Masters of this path, we visualized Abram and his family surrounded in light – being guided by God, Christ, Guru. We also prayed for those doctors and nurses who will be with him in the surgery tomorrow – that the Light blesses and guides them in their work.  We also prayed for Abram’s recovery process.

All in all – the weekend was a warm and joyful time for Abram to connect with friends and feel everyone’s support. They all drove back to San Francisco this morning and should be getting settled in now.

Prayer Request

Please keep Abram in your prayers tonight and tomorrow, and in the coming days.  When he saw the doctor on Friday, Abram heard the benefits and risks of 3 different surgery/treatment options that could unfold.

Abram has some say in what happens in the surgery tomorrow. (I know which way he is leaning – but I don’t want to say because this is a special time for the family to talk and pray about it; it is an ongoing, private process. See them all held in the Light as they support Abram at this time.)

May the Light be with him, and guide him well. May he be filled with peace and healing grace NOW.

Abram Gornik – Surgery this Monday

Dear Ones,

Yesterday, somehow, the e-mail system on this website sent out again the original prayer request about Abram Gornik. I don’t know how that happened  – so I took it as Providence to get more prayers for Abram now.  There have been many emergency prayer requests lately that I have put out on the Ananda Village voice mail – and I think God and Guru did not want Abram’s prayer needs to get lost in that wave! So please surround him with extra prayers over the weekend, and into Monday. I will update you as soon as possible.

The family all flew in from Hawaii yesterday, and he is at the doctor’s appointment this morning as I write this. His surgery is scheduled for Monday, January 11th.

At Abram’s request, the whole family is coming up to Ananda Village for the weekend. He especially wants to play volleyball with his friends, young and old – so that is happening tonight in the community center here at Ananda Village.

God bless you all, and thank you for your prayers!

joy!

But go easy on the carbs…

This has to be the “photo of the Year”

Sigh…

Where to now?

“Oh man, how did I end up a baby seal in the aortic?”

AND ONE MORE….

The next picture will warm your heart.

The Doberman is pregnant. The fireman had just saved her from a fire in her house, rescuing her by carrying her out of the house into her front yard, then he continued to fight the fire.

When he finally got done putting the fire out,
he sat down to catch his breath and rest.

A photographer from the Charlotte , North Carolina Newspaper, noticed the dog in the distance looking at the fireman.

He saw the Doberman walking straight toward the firefighter
and wondered what she was going to do..

As he raised his camera, she came up to the tired man who had just saved her life and the lives of her babies and kissed him just as the photographer snapped this photograph.

How to enter a prayer request

Dear Ones,

Lately the prayer request form at the healing prayer website has been “down” and the IT staff is still trying to figure out why – and a few other aspects of the ananda.org site have also been affected…

So lately I’ve been getting a lot of prayer requests directly via e-mail and that is okay – except that about 99% of the time I have to e-mail the person back and ask for the NAME of the prayer recipient!

Our healing prayer council is actually made up of very intelligent people – so that is not the issue.  I think we become so familiar with how lovely prayer works in healing and comforting the sick that people forget the details.  So the prayer requests might read “please pray for me” – yet there is no signature and I have to look it up by the e-mail address (if I should be so lucky…)  Or it might read “please pray for my aunt or my Mom”, etc. Yet no name or other details are included!

It would be fine if this were the rare occasion – but it is the vast majority of the time. This is why I had a prayer form created – but now it is on the blink. So I am simply asking this favor of you – for each and every prayer request and for each and every renewal – please submit “name/rank/serial #”  – or really: name, location, age and condition to be prayed for“.

Please especially do this even when you are forwarding on e-mails from your relatives that are updates on your loved ones condition. Think of it as a mini-prayer as you write that basic information on the top of each page. Remember – we get a few hundred prayer requests each month…so you don’t want your healing prayer minister, and her helpful volunteers, to go batty and have to put on the top of the prayer list!

Thanks for your help with this. I don’t expect perfection – just improvement! That would be lovely.  Along the same lines, you might set up your e-mails to include an automatic signature of your choosing, such as your name.  Many times I have to search our database to figure out who is writing to me!

Okay, I don’t mean to complain – I’m just doing my little bit to improve the healing prayer ministry.

This reminds me a bit of the story from the life of George Washington Carver:

When I was young, I said to God, “God, tell me the mystery of the universe.”

But God answered, “That knowledge is for me alone.”

So I said, “God, tell me the mystery of the peanut.”

Then God said, “Well, George, that’s more nearly your size.

So, in that spirit my simple request is more nearly our size, all around.

Love and blessings in the New Year!

joy!

Mary Kretzmann
